What is Depakote?

Manufacturer: Abbott Pharmaceutical
Depakote is a anti-seizure medication approved for use by the US Food and Drug Administration in 1983. Depakote is also used to prevent migraine headaches and in the treatment of the manic phase of bipolar disorders (manic-depressive illness).
What are the Risks?
Birth Defects: In 2006 a “black box” warning was placed on the medication’s label, warning pregnant patients about potential Depakote related birth defects. A study done the same year found that about 20% of babies born to mothers taking Depakote suffered serious problems, as opposed to other drugs which only had rates of between 1 to 11%.
Liver Damage: Depakote can cause serious or even fatal liver damage
Pancreatitis: Depakote can cause serious or even fatal Pancreatic damage

How could this happen?
The "Black Box" warning on Depakote labels indicate the increased risks of birth defects rather than excluding Depakote use during pregnancy. The advantages of using Depakote out weigh the known negative side effects of not using Depakote. However, on May 6, 2009 the FDA's Pediatric Advisory Committee said, "We recommend that the issue of developmental delay (an unlabeled event) associated with fetal exposure to divalproex (depakote) be studied further." (page 22)
